Mourinho: United now under pressure to win after spending big

Jose Mourinho has admitted he is happy to step out of the spotlight after Manchester United's mammoth summer outlay and heaped the pressure on the Old Trafford club saying they would now have to live up to the greater expectations.

Chelsea have taken a cautious approach to the transfer market this close season after the extravagance of recent years, with France winger Florent Malouda - who sealed a switch to Stamford Bridge yesterday - the only cash deal clinched since the end of last term.

Meanwhile United, who have had to stand back and watch Blues owner Roman Abramovich splash his millions since his arrival in England in 2003, have spent lavishly on the likes of Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson, with Carlos Tevez set to follow.

But rather than cast an envious eye towards Old Trafford, Blues boss Mourinho insists he is delighted to allow the "responsibility" for success to rest on the shoulders of United counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson.

He said: "Every club does its own analysis of the market and their needs.

"Manchester United's spending is something that we don't control, we don't want to control - we don't comment, we don't want to comment.

"But we know that in the previous three seasons when we spent some millions, everybody pointed at us as the team with more responsibility to win because we were the spenders in the market.

"That's not the case this season. The only player we've bought was Malouda. We are very happy with that."

The Portuguese insists that the arrival of Malouda will not herald the end of Arjen Robben's career in west London.

Mourinho said claimed he would "love to keep them both", but Robben seems less sure where he will start the season after revealing talks over a new contract were not progressing smoothly.

The Holland international admitted: "I don't know what will happen. I have not signed a new deal and will see what the future brings. The talks have not gone really well."

Should those discussions continue to stall, La Liga champions Real Madrid will be first to step in with a bid.
