Mowbray big-time vow for Phillips

Tony Mowbray has dangled the carrot of a Premiership swansong in front of Kevin Phillips as the perfect incentive for the veteran striker to inflict more derby-day mayhem on Wolves.

West Bromwich Albion's boss has confirmed that the former England striker, who will be 34 by the start of next season, will form part of his plans in the top flight if his team can see off their Black Country rivals at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night to book a Championship play-off final spot.

Mowbray: Bigging up Phillips

Phillips has an enviable record in derby games, scoring 12 in 26 appearances, including winners in the Tyne-Wear, Birmingham and south coast derbies.

His two goals in the 3-2 first-leg win at Wolves followed a hat-trick against Barnsley to secure a place for Albion in the end-of-season shake-up.

Mowbray said: "Kevin will be an integral part of our squad if we go up," said Mowbray. "We're at the very end of the season but he's still showing an appetite and is hitting fabulous form.

"He's not showing any signs of tapering away at all. I played against him when he was in his prime nine years ago and he still looks a similar kind of footballer. If you put the ball in front of him, he will stick it away."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy wants Wednesday night's sell-out match to be as much of a humdinger as the first meeting.

He said: "I went to the League Managers Association dinner on Monday night and everyone came up to me and said: 'Great game, Mick'. But I'd rather we were rubbish and winners.

"But make no mistake, we're going to win. We know all about their strikers. Diomansy Kamara scored a great goal on Sunday.

"And in Phillips they have a guy who won the Golden Boot not that long ago. Any chink in your armour and he will exploit it."

McCarthy confirmed that Wolves have been practising penalties in case they are required.

This season, they had to wait until their last League match to score from the spot, having missed four previous attempts.
