Moyes challenge reserves to prove they can hack it as Alkmaar challenge looms

David Moyes has challenged his squad players to use Everton's UEFA Cup clash with AZ Alkmaar in Holland tonight to force their way into his first-team plans.

With a place in the knockout stage already assured and senior players Tim Cahill, Yakubu, Mikel Arteta, Joseph Yobo and Tim Howard left at home, Moyes believes the DSB Stadion is an ideal setting to test the depth of his squad.

Moyes: Rallying replacements

There will be a rare opportunity for midfielder Thomas Gravesen and a number of youngsters, possibly including 16-year-old Jack Rodwell.

It will also be an important night for England striker Andy Johnson, who has been put in the shade by Yakubu's fine form.

Moyes said: 'When these moments come, are they ready to take them and are they good enough to play for Everton?

'It will never be a team, it will always be a squad, so for many of them getting the game is really important.'
