'Mr Man City' quits the club he adores after 11 years as a director

John Wardle walked out on his beloved Manchester City yesterday.

City's deputy chairman, whose devotion has cost him £20million, quit after 11 years as a director.

His departure severs another link to the pre-Thaksin Shinawatra era following chief executive Alistair Mackintosh's move to Fulham.

Friends urged him to resign towards the end of last season, when the controversy over the future of former manager Sven Goran Eriksson threatened to become a destabilising factor at the club, but Wardle resisted.

Meanwhile, Thaksin faces a Thai court on corruption charges that could see the club's owner jailed for up to 13 years.
