But Henman, who unlike Murray has yet to agree to an autobiography even at the end of his playing career, gave his landmark comment in the unlikely surroundings of the Lord's Long Room during a benefit function for England cricket coach Jeremy Snape, who has got to know Henman well through family connections.

Special guest Henman took part in a brief question and answer session between courses with the master of ceremonies, BBC radio cricket correspondent Jon Agnew, who asked him how Wimbledon would cope without him, as Andy Murray came across as a lot less "cuddly".

Henman responded: "He's a miserable git," and when asked about Murray's chances of winning Wimbledon said that his temperament would have to improve.

Snape, who is still contracted to Leicestershire, had returned for the dinner from India where he is assistant coach for the Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals, currently leading the Twenty20 Indian Premier League.
