Murray back with a bang in Montreal

World number 14 Andy Murray made a perfect return from injury with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Robby Ginepri at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Although Ginepri was competitive around the court he could not live with the serve and volley game produced by Murray, who moved into the second round in less than an hour and a half.

Straight sets: Andy Murray was too good for Robby Ginepri

He will now play Fabio Fognini in the second round.

Though he initially looked rusty and a little tentative, the British number one did not appear hindered by any after-effects of the wrist injury which had kept him out since mid-May.

Murray was off to a flying start, setting up break point in the first game courtesy of a forehand cross-court winner.

Although he failed to take advantage by putting a backhand lamely into the net but his opponent reciprocated and a net cord gave the young Scot an immediate lead.

Murray then recovered from 30-0 down to win the next game for a 2-0 lead.

However, the American held his serve and broke back to level the scores before winning the fifth game to go 3-2 up.

The 20-year-old levelled and then a fabulous cross-court shot set up break point which he squandered by pulling a shot well wide before hitting two returns long - enabling Ginepri to hold his serve.

Murray levelled and then broke to serve for the set with Ginepri gifting his opponent a set point by putting a shot narrowly wide and the Dunblane player produced a perfect volley at the net.

However, the unpredictable Ginepri recovered well to rapidly claim the first three games of the second set before Murray hit back himself.

The world number 13 held serve before forcing Ginepri into a mistake for break point which he converted as the American put a return into the net and then Murray drew level at 3-3.

Murray had his opponent scurrying around the court and a perfect backhand down the line set up another break which he converted when Ginepri put a return into the net.

The world number 58 showed his frustration when he threw his racket on the ground and kicked the hoardings.

Although Ginepri saved several game points, a long return gave the Scot a 5-3 lead with Ginepri forced to serve to stay in the match.

The 24-year-old held forcing Murray to serve the game but another mistake by the American, who put a cross-court shot wide, gave the Briton match point which he converted emphatically with an ace.
