Murray brothers unite to eliminate China crisis

Andy Murray has enlisted the help of his brother Jamie as he makes a late charge towards a place in the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai.

Murray could qualify for the £1.8million eight-man event in China with a good run in the singles at the Paris Masters this week.

He will play doubles with Jamie on Tuesday to get himself used to the fast indoor court at the Palais Omnisports in Bercy.

'I think it will be quite good for me because they've changed the surface in Paris and it's not the same as St Petersburg,' said Murray, who gave himself a leg up the qualifying ladder by winning the St Petersburg Open on Sunday.

'I'll get a feel for the court and what it's like and hopefully I'll feel good going into my singles.'

He and Jamie play Jordan Kerr and Andre Sa in today's first round. Murray has a bye into the second round of the singles, when he will face Jarkko Nieminen or Juan Monaco.

Victory will keep his Shanghai campaign on track, although much could depend on how his rivals fare. Murray is three places behind the eighth and final qualifying place, currently occupied by Germany's Tommy Haas.

Murray must do better than Haas and the 9th and 10th-placed players, Tommy Robredo and James Blake. He must also be wary of being overtaken by those behind him.

To Murray it is simple. 'If all of the guys ahead of me keep losing and I keep winning then I can close the gap,' he said.

He would also be helped if Andy Roddick, already guaranteed a place at Shanghai in 12 days, fails to recover from a heel injury.

The Australian Open, meanwhile, is to take a hard line on match fixing. Steve Wood, Tennis Australia's chief executive, is insisting on a life ban from the tournament for players, coaches or officials found to be involved in corruption and will employ a security firm during the two-week grand slam in January to monitor gambling activity.
