Murray gets lost in the Montreal Fognini

A sheltered court helped to protect Andy Murray from the worst of a blustery wind but could not keep his injury comeback from being blown off course by unknown Fabio Fognini yesterday at the Montreal Masters. The Italian qualifier, ranked 139 to the 14 of British No 1 Murray, showed all the form he needed to keep Murray on the back foot in a 68-minute 6-2, 6-2 rout.

Murray could not build on his solid victory a day earlier as he returned to the game after a three-month absence following a wrist injury and he will now consider skipping the Cincinnati event starting Monday.

He said: "I'm not yet sure if I'll play. It's not enjoyable losing to someone I'd be favoured to beat. I need to decide if I feel like I can go on the court.

Shock defeat: Andy Murray

"But this week was good for me, I wanted to see where I was at. I did OK, but I'm not at 100 per cent. I was a bit stiff today but I expected that. I'm getting closer to being pain-free, 70-80 per cent.

"I'm building up confidence but I want to be able to rely on my forehand and play my regular way."

However, Murray added: "There would have to be something seriously wrong with my wrist for me to miss the U.S. Open."

The Scot never looked like getting started against Fognini, losing the opening game on a break of serve.

The outsider punished Murray with another break for 3-1 and finished off the set after fending off a break point.

The second set was all but a formality, the scampering Italian pounding his quick shots off both wings with Murray unable to offer much resistance.
