Murray holds nerve to keep cup hope alive

Andy Murray battled back from a set down to clinch his place in today's semi-finals of the St Petersburg Open — and keep alive his hopes of reaching the end-of-season ATP Masters Cup.

The British No 1 lost the first set to Russia's Dmitry Tursunov 6-3 before holding his nerve to win the second set tiebreak and take the match the distance.

Murray: fought back

Having saved 12 of 14 break points against him Murray, the second seed, wrapped up a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 win.

He faces another Russian, third seed Mikhail Youzhny, in the semi-finals. The 20-year-old Scot knows he needs to reach — and win — tomorrow's final if he is to have any chance of reaching the season's lucrative finale in Shanghai, for which three places are still up for grabs.

Youzhny reached the last four when German Philipp Kohlschreiber retired from their match after losing the first set 6-4. The seventh seed said he was feeling unwell.

"The win is a win no matter what," said Youzhny. "I'm just glad to be in the semi-finals."

However, the $1million indoor tournament has been overshadowed by the controversy surrounding top seed Nikolay Davydenko's shock defeat by Croat Marin Cilic on Thursday.

The ATP fined the Russian world No 4 $2,000 for lack of effort during the second-round match.
