Murray: I won't copy Lewis and become a tax exile

Andy Murray today vowed not to follow Lewis Hamilton into exile despite making millions from his tennis career.

Formula One star Hamilton announced he was moving to Switzerland last October because of excess intrusion into his private life.

But although the move to a tax exiled country will save the 22-year-old McLaren driver a fortune throughout his career, Murray insists he will not follow suit despite raking in around £1.18million in career prize money so far.

"I'm lucky to have done sufficiently well in my sport that I could buy my penthouse apartment with a roof garden in Wandsworth and think about buying one in Miami," said Murray in his autobiography, Hitting Back. "One day I think I'd like a house in Surrey but I am not so sure about taking off to live in exile somewhere, because the money that you gain might be offset by the amount of time you miss with your family and friends." Prize money for winning Wimbledon will top more than £700,000 this year, but the pursuit of tournament victories and improving on his No12 world ranking remain Murray's goals.

"It is true that I am richer than I was when I was 15 but the last thing I've ever thought about on a tennis court is money," said the 21-year-old, who will play at Queen's club and the Boodles Challenge event at Stoke Park Club in the run up to the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. "You get nervous about winning a tournament: you don't get nervous about winning the $100,000 prize. Money is not the most important thing but I don't want to sound ungrateful."
