That just about caps it: Andy Murray lost in Rotterdam
Murray had followed up his win in the Qatar Masters with victory over Mario Ancic in the Marseille Open on Sunday to push himself back into the world's top 10.
But the 20-year-old struggled to find top form at the Ahoy Indoor Arena in his first meeting with the Dutchman and deservedly lost in straight sets to a player ranked 84 places below him.
Murray ran Haase close in the first game and the Dutch number one had to save two break points after a positive start by the Scot, who comfortably held his serve in the second.
Haase pushed Murray in the third game but the Scot held his nerve to see off three break points with some big serves.
The next five games went with serve as both players found some rhythm, although Murray never looked entirely comfortable.
Haase held serve to take a 6-5 lead and although Murray saved three set points, the world number 94 took the fourth with a decisive forehand return to clinch the first set 7-5.
Hasse, who was a wildcard entry into the tournament, began the second set in similar fashion and efficiently took the first game, in which Murray did not register a point.
But Murray responded well and there was little to chose between the players as the set went with serve until the eighth game.
A sluggish Murray struggled with his second serve and Haase, who shares the same agent, punished a short delivery to take a 5-3 lead.
The 20-year-old Dutchman then served out to take the decisive set 6-3 and set up a second-round meeting with German world number 61 Michael Berrer.
