Mustard gets England off to a flyer

Openers Phil Mustard and Alastair Cook got England off to the best possible start in their must-win one-day clash in Napier as the visitors reached 172-2 off 30 overs.

The pair put on 158 for the opening wicket, with Mustard in particular finally showing the form which persuaded England coach Peter Moores to promote him into the side.

However, with the visitors looking set to record a huge total, Jesse Ryder struck twice in the same over to dismiss both opening batsman.

Mustard was the more aggressive of the opening pair with his 83 coming off just 74 balls and including 11 fours and two huge sixes. He looked set for a maiden century before holing out to Jacob Oram.

Cook was slightly more pedestrian as he reached 69 off 88 balls before playing all around a straight one from Ryder.

Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen were the not out batsman as England looked on course to register a score in excess of 300.
