Compensation bill: Adrian Mutu
Adrian Mutu has been ordered to pay £13.68million to compensate for lost transfer value after the Romania striker was sacked after testing positive for cocaine four years ago.
Chelsea hailed the judgment by FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Committee as ‘an important decision for football’ because it backed a club’s right to tear up a drug user’s contract without fear of the financial consequences.
A club statement said: ‘The decision recognises the damaging effects incidents involving drugs have on football and the responsibilities we have in this area.’
Mutu, a £15.8m signing from Parma in 2003, failed a drug test in October 2004 and was banned for seven months. He was fired by Chelsea but joined Juventus three months later.
Nearly four years on, a compensation figure has been reached based on Mutu’s estimated transfer value at the time he left Stamford Bridge.
Mutu, 29, who moved to Fiorentina for £5.5m in 2006, has 30 days to pay but is expected to appeal.
