Mutu ruling goes Chelsea's way

Chelsea took a major step forward in the battle to win compensation from disgraced former striker Adrian Mutu.

The club, owned by Roman Abramovich, demanded the money after they sacked Mutu for testing positive for cocaine in October 2004, a year after he joined from Parma for £15million.

During his seven-month drugs ban he moved to Italian side Juventus on a free transfer and was sold to Fiorentina in 2006 for £5.5m.

Chelsea started their legal battle after insisting Mutu had breached the terms of his contract by failing the drugs test.

The claim for compensation was rejected by FIFA, who insisted they did not have the jurisdiction to make any order.

However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne ruled the Blues are entitled to the money and that FIFA should decide on the figure.

It is the second time the 28-year-old has lost a CAS ruling - two years ago he unsuccessfully claimed the cocaine test did not mean he had broken the terms of his contract.

Last year Chelsea were fined £40,000 by the Football Association for breaching doping control regulations by carrying out an independent test for drugs.

Mutu is in the Romanian national side aiming to win qualification to next year's European Championships.
