Neville: Blow for McClaren
The 32-year-old right-back, who also missed United's Champions League exit against Milan, has been fighting for recovery since sustaining the injury in a League match against Bolton on March 17.
"Gary has been such a great servant to us and he is my captain, so we had to give him an opportunity to play," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
"Sprinting wasn't a problem but every time he started jogging, the injury surfaced again.
"In the end, we reached the conclusion he was never going to make Saturday, so we took the course of action best suited to getting him fit for the start of next season."
Ferguson will choose between Wes Brown and John O'Shea to face Chelsea, but under-fire England manager Steve McClaren has a bigger problem for a tricky qualifying tie he needs to win. Manchester City's Micah Richards has had calf surgery so McClaren, whose job is on the line if England lose in Estonia on June 6, will be without both his right-backs for that tie and the June 1 friendly with Brazil.
United, meanwhile, are tracking Porto wonderkid Anderson. The 19-year-old Brazilian-born winger has been in brilliant form since his recent return from injury.
Martin Ferguson, brother of manager Sir Alex, was in Portugal last weekend watching Anderson in action in Porto's 1-1 draw at Pacos de Ferreira.
