Neville has a big future, insists Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has given Gary Neville a boost by insisting that he will be Manchester United's right-back next season.

Neville, now fit again, has been out for 14 months with ankle problems and there has been speculation that the United manager might be looking to sign a replacement for his captain.

But Ferguson said: "He will play next year. He will start the season at right-back, I'm sure of that.

"He has been doing well training-wise and I would have played him in the last few weeks if he had had games behind him but he has been out more than a year."

In line with his policy of strengthening an already strong club, Ferguson confirmed that Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes will still have big parts to play even though he aims to add to the squad in the summer.

He said: "Their experience will be utilised very well in the next couple of years. Those three give you that spiritual and experience factor which is important. By the time they go, other players will replace them to keep the continuity of experience and youth."

Ferguson believes young strikers Danny Welbeck, Fraizer Campbell and Manucho have big futures at the club but he still wants a seasoned striker. He has been linked with Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov plus Wigan's Wilson Palacios and Luis Valencia.
