Newcastle look to Swedish star Olsson to shore up their defence

Newcastle lead the race to sign £3million-rated Swedish central defender Jonas Olsson, 24, from Dutch league club NEC Nijmegen.

Olsson said: "I've never hidden my desire to play in England. If I leave in January, NEC can get a lot of money for me."

"I know my agent Martin Dahlin has been working on my behalf," he added.

Newcastle have conceded 21 league goals this season.
