Newcastle set to beat Arsenal challenge in the great Plymouth Spear hunt

Top of the class: Aaron Spear, 15

Newcastle are winning the race to sign Plymouth schoolboy Aaron Spear.

The 15-year-old striker is in talks with the St James' Park club and another Premier League club, believed to be Arsenal.

Argyle chief executive Michael Dunford told the club's official website: "We don't want Aaron to leave us but he is determined to speak to these Premier League teams. We have reluctantly therefore given him permission to talk to them."

Spear is currently on schoolboy terms with the Pilgrims and the club would be entitled to receive a fee - thought be about £1million - if he decided to move on.
