Newcastle warned off Becks as Keegan turns attention to old boy Woodgate

Kevin Keegan has been told there is no way he will land David Beckham and is now turning his attention to Middlesbrough's Jonathan Woodgate as the Toon's returning hero tries - in vain - to spend Mike Ashley's millions.

The latest Magpies' transfer target comes after a series of blows to Keegan's hopes of improving his squad. In recent days Newcastle have been warned off Beckham and David Bentley, while Micah Richards is set to sign a new contract at Manchester City.

LA Galaxy president Alexi Lalas has insisted that Beckham is simply not for sale.

He said: "I can confidently say there is absolutely no truth in the speculation linking David with a move to Newcastle United. David is gearing up for his 100th game for England and we are very proud and excited for him.

"We have had no contact from any representatives for Newcastle United, but I recognise that there will always be speculation surrounding him. He wouldn't be put out on loan to another club - that is not an option - and David is not for sale at any price.

"David is not someone we are grooming and looking to sell on."

Newcastle's need for defensive cover remains as pressing as ever despite the attempts of successive managers to address the situation and Keegan is preparing to turn to former Leeds and Real Madrid centre half Woodgate. Rising England star Richards set to end speculation about his future signing a new deal with City worth more than £10 million.

Middlesbrough-born Woodgate, who celebrated his 28th birthday yesterday, played for Newcastle between 2003-2004 and only agreed a £7million permanent switch to the Riverside Stadium from Real Madrid towards the end of last season.

Keegan could be prepared to use striker Shola Ameobi as a makeweight in any deal to secure the defender's return, although he knows he will face a fight to prise him from Boro boss Gareth Southgate's grasp.

Blackburn chairman John Williams was eager to dismiss any link between his star midfielder and Newcastle.

Yesterday he said: "Our position is clear David Bentley is not for sale."
