Wasn't he world No 2 at one stage?
Oh yes, back in 2002. His rise was almost as dramatic as his subsequent fall. He powered his way up the rankings, despite never reaching a Grand Slam final.
Tommy Haas of Germany celebrates winning his second round match against Tommy Robredo of Spain
So, what happened?
His father, a tennis coach himself, was involved in a car crash, ending up in a coma. Haas Jnr took time off, then suffered a serious shoulder injury that precipitated a fall down the rankings.
Has he ever come
close to regaining
his form?
Not really. But he's no mug on this surface. He reached the fourth round 12 months ago and knocked out 23rd seed Tommy Robredo on Thursday.
So, he likes Wimbledon, then?
More than it likes him. He courted controversy last year by suggesting equal pay was unfair.
Oh, go on. . .
The German said: 'The depth in men's tennis is greater and we play the best of five sets. Not to say the women don't deserve it. But I don't agree with it.'
Go Tommy! Anything else?
Well, he was allegedly poisoned during the Davis Cup semi-final against Russia.
What?
After suffering a stomach virus during a match against Mikhail Youzhny. It was suggested that his food had been tampered with. The International Tennis Federation investigated but found there was no case to answer. Rumours that it was a female chef proved unfounded.
