Dougherty was joint leader of the Celtic Manor Wales Open with a round to go and crashed to 37th with a disappointing 79.
But Willett matched the best performance of his first full season on the circuit when he came through to joint fourth place with a 67.
"It's been an up-and-down season," said Willett ahead of launching his qualifying bid for Turnberry. "I feel like I've played good at times and then I've had really bad weeks."
Willett finished three shots behind Dane Jeppe Huldahl who became the third shock victor on the Tour in just four weeks. Huldahl (67) took the £300,000 prize as he edged out Swede Niclas Fasth (66) by one shot.
