Nine-year wait over for London Irish as they go top

London Irish lead the Guinness Premiership for the first time in nine years after an interception try by Shane Geraghty helped them to an 18-13 victory at Bristol.

Director of rugby Toby Booth said: "It feels like a bit of a loss, to be honest. All credit to Bristol, they were very good.

"In the second half, every time we got to the halfway line we gave the ball back. We didn't make life easy for ourselves and we needed to be more clinical. Now I want our boys to kick on."

Harlequins set themselves up for a titanic Heineken Cup clash at Stade Francais on Saturday by beating Bath 21-14 and are three points behind Irish, in fifth place.

Dean Richards, the Quins director of rugby, has warned returning England stars Ugo Monye, Nick Easter and Danny Care they must battle for places.

Former England scrum-half Andy Gomarsall's superb inside pass opened up the Bath defence for prop Ceri Jones to score the match-winning try and Richards said: "Andy played very well. He pulled it out of the bag.

"Seb Stegmann did well and Tom Guest is playing better than ever. The guys who are coming back will have to perform."

Saracens recorded a 23-6 home win over Worcester and Eddie Jones, their director of rugby, wants Jake White to help them out on the coaching front again in the New Year.

"I'm confident of getting him back here," said Jones. "It was a very good performance from us and I'm really pleased with our whole team."

Wasps secured their second victory of the season by defeating Newcastle 23-17 on Friday.
