No happy return for Lehmann as Wenger backs Almunia

Arsene Wenger admits the hardest aspect of his work is to drop a player but there will be no room for a sentimental birthday treat for Jens Lehmann at Reading tonight.

Lehmann celebrated his 38th birthday on Saturday but has not played a game for Arsenal since his blunder cost the team two points at Blackburn in August.

Wenger admitted that he may allow the German, who is out of contract at the end of the season, to leave in January if he is still on the bench.

Wenger said: "Manuel Almunia has been in the team and the team are doing well, it's as simple as that.

"If the situation is the same in January we will see but we are in November and he has plenty of time in November and December to win his place back."
