No last hurrah for Jol

It could only happen at Tottenham. It wasn't enough that Martin Jol has long since been a dead man walking. Last night his employers dealt him the most humiliating coup de grace imaginable.

Those in White Hart Lane, and watching on television, saw the figure of an apparently broken man. One who appeared to be holding back the tears.

Nightmare at the Lane: Braulio's winner for Getafe

And even as he bowed out, the side still let him down. Getafe were supposed to be UEFA Cup whipping boys, who would provide a confidence boost for Spurs ahead of Sunday's visit of Blackburn - not the ones to inflict a first home European defeat on them for 22 years.

Sevilla boss Juande Ramos will have his work cut out if he is to succeed where Jol has failed solving Tottenham's defensive frailties.

Jermain Defoe justified his rare selection with a goal in the 19th minute, heading home Dimitar Berbatov's nod across goal from Pascal Chimbonda's cross.

But in two minutes Getafe were on terms when Tottenham's back line failed to deal with Esteban Granero's curling free-kick. Ruben de la Red's darting run seemed to unnerve the Spurs defence, but although the ex-Real Madrid player was credited with the goal, replays showed the ball sailed in directly from Granero's dead ball.

Moments later Berbatov appeared to atone for his sulky behaviour on Monday, stooping low to head in Younes Kaboul's centre. But his chance to repay Jol's faith for restoring him to his starting line- up was denied, wrongly, for offside.

A subdued 'Martin, Martin give us a wave' ushered in the second half. All Jol could manage was a halfhearted thumbs-up. As news of his departure filtered through to the Spurs faithful, it was replaced by an emotional stadium-wide 'Stand up for Martin Jol'.

Not surprisingly, the big man had a tear in his eye then.

But Spurs' woeful defending ensured nothing was to be salvaged when Michael Dawson, on for the injured Anthony Gardner, allowed Nobrega Braulio to get ahead of him for a simple tap-in 20 minutes from time.

Jermain Defoe and Didier Zokora celebrate Tottenham's goal

If Jol was in any doubt as to how much his stock had fallen in the boardroom, the wry smile on chairman Daniel Levy's face as Getafe's winner went in said it all.
