'Northern Crock' Owen facing more surgery

Sam Allardyce has vowed to put Newcastle and Michael Owen's interests first if a scan reveals the striker needs surgery on his groin problem.

Owen was forced to limp out of the action for the second game in a row during Sunday's 3-1 win over West Ham, raising fears he could miss England's vital Euro 2008 qualifiers with Estonia and Russia next month.

The striker will have the problem assessed on Monday but Newcastle boss Allardyce insists he will put club before country when deciding what to do.

"If Michael needs an operation, he will have it straight away," he promised.

"I will look after Michael Owen's interest and Newcastle's, and no one else's."

But Allardyce did hint that Owen would be available for his country if any operation and rehabilitation went to schedule.

"If he needs an operation we will find the best surgeon in the world and then he'll recover quicker than anyone. If he needs it we will find the best," he added.
