Norwegian Arvesen holds on for debut Tour win in shadow of drug storm

Norwegian Kurt-Asle Arvesen just managed to hold off a chasing group to win the 11th stage of the Tour de France as another drugs scandal rocked the race.

The 33-year-old, riding for the CSC team, grabbed his debut Tour stage victory in the 104.1-mile stage from Lannemezan to Foix, edging out Martin Elminger of Ag2r-La Mondiale and Lampre's Alessandro Ballan by a tyre's width.

Arvesen said: 'It was always likely to be a tactical finale, but it helps that my legs felt good.'

But the stage began under a cloud with a second rider, Moises Duenas Nevado, tested positive for the banned substance EPO.

The 27-year-old was immediately withdrawn from the race by his Barloworld team and detained by police in Tarbes.

Thursday's flat stage takes in only one categorised climb, presenting Mark Cavendish with the chance of a third stage victory - which no Brit has ever achieved.
