Oakey to fight for British light-heavyweight title

Tony Oakey will fight for the British light-heavyweight title on Friday just a fortnight after being left standing in the ring when his opponent packed his bags and walked out of their challenge at the last moment.

Portsmouth's former WBU champion and his hundreds of fans at the Wembley Arena could not believe champion Peter Oboh had thrown in the towel minutes before he was to leave the dressing-room.

But the British Board of Boxing Control has sanctioned a clash between big-punching Oakey, successfully rebuilding his rollercoaster career after serving a year's ban for testing positive for cocaine, and Ipswich's Steve Spartacus for the vacant crown.

'It's the sort of thing that happens only to me. You would think the things which happen in my career are just too unbelievable to be true,' said Oakey. "It'll definitely make for a good book when I retire.

'I'm not bothered about the short notice. I was in the shape of my life for Oboh anyway and I'll be too much for Spartacus to handle.'
