Odds against Seb

Seb Sanders is now odds-on to win his first jockeys' championship even though his boss Sir Mark Prescott doesn't believe he can.

Sanders, whose arch-rival Jamie Spencer returns to action today after a 15-day ban, has been threatening to take the title for several years.

Title charge: Seb Sanders

But Prescott, who has provided 18 of Sanders' 51 wins so far this campaign which have helped put him 10 ahead of Spencer, says there are three reasons why the man he calls "Mr Reliable" will struggle.

He said: "When the evening meetings end, the big stables will choose their own favourite jockeys.

"The new ruling that jockeys may ride at only nine meetings a week will stop him from riding winners for us. He has missed two days for us already.

"The new handicap rules that there will now be 6lb cumulative penalties (instead of 1lb penalty during a 10-day period) will hinder our chances of multiple handicap wins (11 last year).

"He will also struggle come September when the maiden races start. We'll try to help him as much as possible. He deserves to be champion because he makes fewer mistakes than most — but he probably won't be."

Meanwhile Frankie Dettori, on fire since landing his first Vodafone Derby on Authorized, scored an 81-1 treble on Fleeting Spirit, Megaton and Truly Enchanting at Nottingham yesterday.

Now on 21 winners for the season, Dettori is quoted at 50-1 for the jockeys' title by William Hill.
