Old Trafford would be right up Ramsey's street, say United

Manchester United and Arsenal have gone head to head in the battle to land one of the most exciting young prospects in the Championship.

Both have had £5million bids accepted for Cardiff City's 17-year-old midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Despite United manager Sir Alex Ferguson being on holiday for the next three weeks, the Barclays Premier League champions are continuing their preparations for the future.

And they were confident enough that Ramsey would choose them ahead of Arsenal to make an announcement on their own website yesterday.

They confirmed: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it has agreed terms with Cardiff City for the transfer of Aaron Ramsey subject to terms being agreed and the player passing a medical."

If the United deal goes through it is likely that Ramsey will be loaned back to the Championship side for next season.

Arsenal are also believed to have made the same offer as part of their bid.

A statement from beaten FA Cup finalists Cardiff said last night: "We can confirm that the club has received formal bids from three top Premier League teams for Aaron Ramsey and Aaron has been given permission to speak to two of these teams.

"One of them is Manchester United, though at this stage we can confirm that no deal has been done and the player has not yet agreed terms."

Uncapped Ramsey was included in John Toshack's full Wales squad for last week's friendly double-header against Iceland and Holland but did not feature.

He has played just 22 games for Cardiff but has been touted as Ryan Giggs' heir apparent in the Wales side.

Ramsey's midfield colleague Joe Ledley has given Cardiff a huge boost by pledging his allegiance to the club and expressing his determination to win promotion to the Premier League next season.

The Cardiff-born winger, 21, said: "Of course I'd love to play in the Premier League - every footballer wants to. 'But my dream is to play there with Cardiff City and I hope it can happen next year."
