Olympic Games diary: Adlington left out in women's 4x200m relay farce

Great Britain women's 4x200m relay medal challenge ended in farce when the swim team failed to make the final after Rebecca Adlington and Caitlin McClatchey were left out.

400m freestyle gold medallist Adlington and British 100m and 200m record holder McClatchey were rested by performance director Michael Scott and women's coach Ben Titley ahead of an expected gold medal showdown with the USA.

The relatively inexperienced pair of Hannah Miley and Fran Halsall were drafted in to swim alongside 400m freestyle bronze medallist Joanne Jackson and Mel Marshall, but they could only finish sixth in their semi-final.

The decision to include Halsall, 18, who had earlier won her 100m freestyle heat, seemed inexplicable as she tired in the final leg and Britain slipped from second to sixth.

'We are absolutely gutted,' said Marshall.

Scott added: 'I accept full responsibility but if you look at the stats, the teams winning medals have rested one or two women.'

GB's late hockey heartbreak

Great Britain's men's hockey team came within seven minutes of securing a shock 0-0 draw against pre-tournament favourites Holland.

But they succumbed to the sport's No 1 penalty corner specialist, Taeke Taekema, who scored after James Tindall was sin-binned for tripping Timme Hoyng.

Great Britain are now third in their group after the 1-0 defeat and coach Jason Lee said Tindall apologised to him afterwards.

Lee added: 'It is fairly well established that Holland are one of the best teams in the world and we're not but we are trying to push that kind of standard. I'm very proud of how we have played.'
