1868: Edwin Pooley of Surrey became the first wicketkeeper to dismiss 12 batsmen in one match when he claimed his haul against Sussex.
1977: American Mark Hayes became the first man to record a round of 63 in the Open, achieving the feat at Turnberry.
David Platt: Ended his career ten years ago today
1985: The unseeded Boris Becker became the youngest Wimbledon men's singles champion, aged only 17.
1990: Martina Navratilova beat Zina Garrison in only 57 minutes to win a record ninth Wimbledon women's singles title.
1990: Peter Shilton ended his international career by playing a record 125th and last time for England in the third-place play-off match against Italy at Bari in the World Cup.
1998: Former England captain David Platt announced his retirement as a player to concentrate on a new career in management.
1998: Brazil reached the final of the World Cup with a 4-2 victory over Holland on penalties. The match had ended 1-1 after extra-time. Brazil went on to lose 3-0 to hosts France in the final.
2003: David Dunn completed a £5.5million move from Blackburn to Birmingham.
2006: Jockeys Kieren Fallon, Fergal Lynch and Darren Williams were suspended from riding in Britain after being charged as part of a police investigation into alleged race-fixing.
2007: McLaren's Lewis Hamilton qualified on pole position for his first British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
2007: Venus Williams won her fourth Wimbledon singles title with a 6-4 6-1 victory over surprise finalist Marion Bartoli.
