1987: Laura Davies became Britain's first winner of the US Women's Open, beating Joanne Carner and Ayoko Okamoto in a play-off at Plainfield, New Jersey.

1990: Dennis Andries became the first British boxer to twice regain a world title, beating Jeff Harding in a world light-heavyweight fight in Melbourne.

1999: European 200metres champion Dougie Walker was acquitted by the UK Athletics disciplinary panel investigating his failed drugs test in December 1998.

2000: Arsenal agreed to sell Marc Overmars to Barcelona for £25million.

2003: Nasser Hussain stood down as England Test captain.

2004: Bolton signed Fernando Hierro on a one-year deal.

2006: Ruud van Nistelrooy completed his move to Real Madrid from Manchester United.
