1926: Gertrude Ederle, a 19-year-old New Yorker, became the first woman to swim
the English Channel. She made the crossing from Cap Gris-Nez to Deal in 14 hours
39 minutes, cutting some two hours off the record.
1961: Stirling Moss enjoyed the 16th and last Formula One win of his career at
the Nurburgring in 1961 when he won the German Grand Prix in a Lotus-Climax.
1991: Ukrainian pole-vaulter Sergey Bubka cleared 20 feet for the first time at
Malmo in Sweden, setting a world record of 20 feet and one quarter inch (6.10
metres).
Bubka would go on to dominate the sport, and the Ukranian still holds both outdoor and indoor world records for the pole vault
2001: Former Australia cricket coach Bobby Simpson announced his decision to
stand down from the same role at Lancashire.
2002: David Burns and Keith Harris resigned as chief executive and chairman
respectively of the Football League due to the ITV Digital fiasco.
2004: Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric claimed Arsenal had attempted to hijack his club's bid to sign Michael Carrick. The West Ham midfielder eventually joined Tottenham.
2006: England's Jenson Button won the Hungarian Grand Prix, his first victory after 113 attempts.
