1984: British decathlete Daley Thompson set a new world record of 8,847 points
to retain his Olympic title in Los Angeles.
1990: Joe Mercer, who guided Manchester City to the league title in 1968, died
aged 76.
2000: Italian striker Benito Carbone signed a four-year contract for Premier
League Bradford City on a free transfer from Aston Villa for a reported salary
of £40,000 a week.
What a feeling: Daley Thompson wins the 1984 Decathlon gold
2002: Bradford, now with debts of some £36million and in administration, were
granted permission to play their opening game of the season against Wolves after
the Football League received assurances over a proposed financial rescue
package.
2003: Manchester United youngster Jimmy Davis was killed in a car crash on his
way to play on loan for Watford against Coventry. The game was postponed as a
mark of respect for the 21-year-old.
2004: West Brom striker Lee Hughes was jailed for six years after being found
guilty of causing death by dangerous driving following a trial at Coventry Crown
Court.
2006: Former Wimbledon mixed doubles champion John Lloyd was appointed Great
Britain Davis Cup captain.
2007: England spinner Ashley Giles, who was part of the 2005 Ashes-winning
side, retired from cricket.
