On this day in sport - January 14

1928: Jimmy McGrory scored a Scottish top-flight record of eight goals in one game for Celtic against Dunfermline.

1958: A crowd of 60,000 watched Manchester United beat Red Star Belgrade 2-1 in a European Cup tie at Old Trafford. The second leg, three weeks later, was to be the last appearance of the Busby Babes before the Munich air disaster.

1999: Wimbledon signed striker John Hartson from West Ham for a club record £7million.

2003: Robbie Fowler agreed personal terms with Manchester City for a £6million move from Leeds.

2005: Fernando Morientes completed his £6.3million transfer to Liverpool from Real Madrid.
