1977: Virginia Wade beat Betty Stove to win the women's singles title at Wimbledon.
1979: Steve Ovett deprived Sebastian Coe of his world mile record when he set a new best mark of three minutes 48.8 seconds in Oslo.
David Beckham signed a four-year deal with Real Madrid five years ago today
1999: Former England captain David Platt was appointed as manager at Nottingham Forest. He stayed for two seasons at the City Ground, but could not take the club back into the top flight and left to take charge of the England under-21 side in July 2001.
2003: David Beckham signed a four-year contract with Real Madrid; Chelsea chairman Ken Bates agreed to sell his majority shareholding to Roman Abramovich.
2004: Portugal beat Holland 2-1 in Lisbon to reach the final of Euro 2004 with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Maniche.
2006: Wayne Rooney was sent off as England lost their World Cup quarter-final to Portugal on penalties. The match finished goalless after extra time and England lost the penalty shoot-out 3-1 with Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher all missing from the spot.
2006: Former England fast bowler Fred Trueman died at the age of 75 less than two months after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
2007: Owen Hargreaves completed his transfer from Bayern Munich to Manchester United on a four-year contract for a reported £17million fee.
