1914: WG Grace scored 69 not out for Eltham against Grove Park in his last cricket match. He was 66 at the time.
1965: Former light-heavyweight champion Freddie Mills was found shot dead in his car in Soho, London. A verdict of suicide was recorded.
1992: A record 172 nations were represented at the Olympic Games, which opened in Barcelona.
Legend: Ben Hogan was the first golfer to win three majors in a calender year.
1997: Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers of all time, died aged 84. He was the first man to win three majors in a calendar year (1953) and was only denied the chance of a fourth because the Open Championship and US PGA overlapped.
1999: Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France. He would go on to win a record seven straight titles.
2001: Welsh side Barry Town suffered an 8-0 thrashing at the hands of Porto in a Champions League qualifier.
2004: Newcastle completed the signing of England midfielder Nicky Butt from Manchester United.
2006: New Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn appointed himself as manager. He returned to the boardroom after five winless matches.
2007: Wigan Warriors were docked four points after being found guilty of breaching the Super League salary cap in 2006.
