1895: The first 'real' motor race ended. The first car to cross the line in the
Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race was a Panhard-Levassor, driven by Emile Levassor at an
average speed of 15mph.
1897: One of the greatest long-distance runners of all time, Parmo Nurmi, was
born. The Finn won a record 12 medals, including nine golds, in the three
Olympic Games between 1920 and 1928.
1915: Donald Budge, the first man to achieve a Grand Slam in tennis, was born. His second successive Wimbledon title in 1938 formed part of his Grand Slam.
2001: Referees became professional for the first time in English football and came under the control of the Professional Game Match Official Board.

2004: England lost 2-1 to France at Euro 2004, having led 1-0, with Zinedine Zidane scoring both goals for the French.
2005: England beat Australia by 100 runs at the Rose Bowl in the first Twenty20
international between the two countries.
