1904: Swimmer Johnny Weissmuller was born. He became the first man to swim 100
metres in less than one minute and won five gold medals at the 1924 and 1928
Olympics. He later moved into acting and played Tarzan in the eponymous film. He
died in Acapulco, Mexico on January 20, 1984.
1954: Lester Piggott won his first Epsom Derby at the age of 18 on Never Say
Die, a 33-1 shot.
1970: Former Formula One world champion Bruce McLaren died after a testing
accident.
Don't bat an eyelid ...Jose was appointed Chelsea boss four years ago today
1985: UEFA ruled English clubs would be banned indefinitely from European
competition following the riot at the Heysel Stadium, in which Liverpool fans
were involved.
2000: Dutch striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink signed for Chelsea from Atletico
Madrid for £15million.
2004: Jose Mourinho was unveiled as the new manager of Chelsea on a three-year
contract.
2005: Wicketkeeper Keith Piper was sacked by Warwickshire after testing
positive for cannabis.
2007: England were beaten 55-22 by South Africa in the second rugby union Test
in Pretoria.
