1969: Three-time Wimbledon champion Maureen Connolly, the first woman to win
tennis' Grand Slam, died of cancer at the age of 34.
1970: Brazil beat Italy 4-1 in the World Cup final in Mexico City; Tony Jacklin
became the first British golfer since Ted Ray in 1920 to win the US Open with
victory at Hazeltine, Minnesota
Manchester City owner: Thaksin Shinawatra
1975: West Indies, captained by Clive Lloyd, beat Australia by 17 runs at
Lord's to win the first cricket World Cup.
2002: Brazil beat England 2-1 in Shizuoka, Japan, to progress to the World Cup
semi-final. Michael Owen put England ahead early on but Rivaldo equalised and
Ronaldinho scored with a 40-yard free-kick.
2004: South African Retief Goosen won the US Open at Shinnecock Hills on
four-under-par 276.
2005: Chelsea signed left-back Asier del Horno from Athletic Bilbao for
£8million. He moved back to Spain with Valencia the following season for
£4.8million.
2007: Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, through his bid vehicle UK
Sports Investments, lodged a formal £81.6million bid for Manchester City.
