1990: Monica Seles ended Steffi Graf's record of 66 consecutive victories when she beat her 6-4 6-3 in the final of the BMW German Open.
1992: Barcelona made it third time lucky as they won the European Cup, with Ronald Koeman scoring the only goal against Sampdoria at Wembley. In their previous two appearances in the final, the Spanish side had lost to Benfica in 1961 and Steaua Bucharest in 1986.
1996: After more than 650 games and 346 goals for Liverpool, legendary striker Ian Rush left Anfield on a free transfer to join Leeds.
2002: Scotland suffered their fourth successive defeat under new boss Berti Vogts when they were beaten 2-0 by South Africa in Hong Kong, making the German the first ever Scotland manager to lose his opening four matches in charge of the national side.
2006: Munster won the Heineken Cup after beating Biarritz 23-19 at the Millennium Stadium.
2007: Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer told German TV that England midfielder and Manchester United target Owen Hargreaves was leaving the club.
