One year's enough for Phillips as he agrees short-term deal with West Brom

The chance to return to the Premier League could convince Kevin Phillips to stay with West Brom despite a clash over a new contract.

The 34-year-old striker had hoped to get a two-year deal after scoring 22 goals for West Brom in their Championship winning campaign.

However, the club are only offering a one-year deal, leading to speculation the former England striker would leave.

Phillips's agent, though, Phil Smith said today: 'We've now come to terms with the fact there may not be two years on offer. The lure of Premier League football again is very big.'

Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi could be on his way to West Brom in a £3million deal.

The ex-England Under-21 player is fourth-choice striker at Newcastle and ended last season on loan at Stoke.
