O'Neill calls for consistency from Carew

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has challenged striker John Carew to repeat the performance that destroyed Newcastle on a more consistent basis.

The Norwegian hit a second-half hat-trick to sink Kevin Keegan's men, and O'Neill said: "John should have plenty of self belief. He's played in a Champions League final and scored. He's an affable lad and very popular in the dressing room.

On song: Carew hit a fine hat-trick against Newcastle

"That performance against Newcastle, I believe he's capable of achieving on a more consistent basis.

"I'm not saying he should end up with a hat-trick every week. But those performances where he can turn players, hold people off with his great strength and have the ability to turn and get shots on goal, are excellent.

"If the goals are not coming, you should still have the confidence that you are playing a big role for the team.

"Some of the games where he might feel it has not gone so well for him, actually I've been pleased with him. Against Newcastle, he was magnificent."

Carew, who celebrated his first hat-trick for seven years, was quick to praise strike partner Marlon Harewood, who has made telling contributions when coming off the bench in recent weeks.

The Norwegian international, the first Villa player to score a hat-trick on home soil in 13 years, said: "Marlon did a great job with his physical presence and workrate.

"He gave us an extra dimension and it was what we needed to get control of the match.

"We started to put pressure on defenders and create chances and he was a big part of that. His entrance into the play was very important to us.

"I was proud to score a hat-trick but more important is the team winning and keeping on track for what we want to achieve this season."
