O'Neill ready to accept Crouch and 8m in swap deal for Barry from Aston Villa

Peter Crouch has been revealed as the makeweight in the deal that will take Aston Villa captain and England midfielder Gareth Barry to Liverpool.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill also wants £8million after rejecting Liverpool's original offer of £10million for Barry, made up of cash and players.

O'Neill is desperate to keep hold of his skipper, who has played at Villa Park for more than a decade, and is determined to play hardball in the negotiations, valuing England striker Crouch at only £7million, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Ulsterman would, however, be prepared to consider taking Crouch as part of the deal.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez rates Crouch at around £15m with Portsmouth reportedly interested in bringing him to Fratton Park to play alongside England team-mate Jermain Defoe.

Benitez is willing to make former Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant part of the transaction although O'Neill is understood to have rejected this offer.

But Liverpool are set to receive a lump sum from Juventus for the impending departure of midfielder Xabi Alonso which could persuade Benitez to let Crouch leave Anfield for less.

Barry, 27, has admitted he is flattered by Liverpool's interest and that he would like to play in the Champions League.

The midfielder has also refused Villa's offer of an improved deal after stating he wants his future resolved quickly.
