Olympics diary: Tom Daley's in deep water

Matt Majendie's Olympic diary: Tom Daley's in deep water and there are teething issues in India...

Tom's in deep water if he doesn't cut back

Tom Daley may be one of the faces of the London Olympics but his coach has warned him that he is in danger of missing out on a medal altogether with the volume of his media work. Team GB diving coach Alexei Evangulov said: "The people in Great Britain are mistakenly convinced that he is the best in the world but he is not."

Teething issues at India's rural games

India, it appears, is already getting in the mood for the Olympics with their own big event known as the Indian Rural Games. Anyway, it's not your ordinary bunch of sports that get a look-in at the Games, which took place from Thursday to Sunday last week. Okay, the likes of the 100m and the discus feature but there's also "feats of strength by ruralities", which includes the likes of pulling a car with your teeth, and "loading, offloading of trolley of paddy".

Pleading guilty to manners overboard

Ben Ainslie is bidding for a remarkable fourth gold medal at the Games and was finally given the all clear to do so following a Royal Yachting Association hearing after he boarded a media boat to confront the crew at last year's World Championships. Not the done thing in sailing which, judging by the wording from RYA officials,
is the politest of sports. In their statement, they found him guilty of a "gross breach of good manners".

Sport was a lost cause for Emilie

It turns out that Lost actress Emilie De Ravin could have taken a very different path in her career. At the age of eight, the Australian was a budding gymnast and won a place in an Olympics training group. She, er, lost her way in a sporting sense and ended up going into acting. As she explained recently: "It was just too much and it wasn't fun any more."
