Out goes Rob, in comes Nigel... but Ince looks best bet for Foxes job

Nigel Worthington has made a return to football with Leicester City as Milan Mandaric finally axed manager Rob Kelly.

Former Norwich boss Worthington (pictured, centre) has been given a five game remit to keep Leicester in the Championship. His first game? Home to Norwich.

Sacked: Rob Kelly

His agreement with Mandaric lasts only until the end of the season. Then the millionaire will review the situation — with Paul Ince, doing a fine job at League Two Macclesfield, among the frontrunners to land the post on a permanent basis.

Until then the task of guiding Leicester to safety falls on a man shown the door at Carrow Road six months ago.

Having won just once in their last eight games, Leicester are just five points above the relegation zone. Defeat at Plymouth on Easter Monday sealed Kelly's fate.

"I want to take the club upwards," said Mandaric. "Unfortunately, we're going in the wrong direction. So I've been forced to make a change to the manager."

Kelly, who saved the club from relegation last season, did not spend a single penny in the transfer market.

He was hoping Mandaric's takeover would have been completed before the January window closed but it was not concluded in time.

Worthington said: "Only a fool wouldn't want to be in charge of this club if there was an opportunity to do it. I know it's very short notice but that's part of the excitement of the challenge."
