Outraged Fallon's demands inquiry after his race-fixing trial collapses

Kieren Fallon was today cleared of race fixing and immediately demanded an inquiry into why he was ever accused.

All charges against the six-times champion jockey and five other men were thrown out as their £10million trial collapsed at the Old Bailey. Mr Justice Forbes said there was no case to answer following defence submissions at the end of two months of evidence.

Now the Irishman is set to get back in the saddle in Britain following a 17-month suspension imposed after his arrest.

Fallon, 42, said: "I am relieved and delighted but I am also absolutely outraged. There was never any evidence. I'd like to thank all the friends who came to court to support me."

Fallon's legal team demanded two separate inquiries to look at the roles played by the police and the Crown Prosecution Service.

Fallon, fellow jockeys Fergal Lynch and Darren Williams, gambler and businessman Miles Rodgers and two other men had been accused of plotting to throw races.

But the "fatal flaw" in the case was that no one was able to prove the jockeys had interfered with horses. Fivetimes champion jockey Willie Carson hailed the collapse of the trial as " fantastic news for racing".

The case was passed on to police by the British racing chiefs who were today facing serious questions over their conduct. British Horseracing Authority spokesman Paul Struthers said: "Irrespective of the outcome, this has been a sad episode of horseracing.

"The allegation in court that racing and punters were the victims of a conspiracy has been a cloud over the whole sport."
