Owen drought is over

Michael Owen scored his first Newcastle goal for 19 months last night in a 3-1 victory at Hartlepool.

Owen came on as a half-time substitute and tapped in for his first goal for the club since his hat-trick at West Ham on December 17, 2005.

Shola Ameobi got Newcastle's other goals and manager Sam Allardyce said: "It was nice to see Michael score and Shola.

"It's been a long wait for both of them. Shola has been out with that hip injury for a long time as well."

Aiyegbeni Yakubu scored a penalty and Fabio Rochemback was sent off in Middlesbrough's 1-1 draw with Hertha Berlin in Bad Waltersdorf, Austria.

Andriy Voronin, Liverpool's free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, scored twice before being replaced by £20million club record buy

Fernando Torres after 64 minutes of their 3-2 friendly win over Werder Bremen in Switzerland.

West Ham's new £6.1m winger Julien Faubert was carried off with an ankle injury during the 1-0 defeat against Czech side Sigma Olmutz in Austria.

He will have further tests today amid fears that he could miss the start of the season.

Diomansy Kamara opened his Fulham account in a 1-0 win at Dagenham and Redbridge.
