Owen needs rehab for the rest of his career, Allardyce tells his star striker

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen is facing rehabilitation for the rest of his playing career, according to manager Sam Allardyce.

The 27-year-old England international has had reconstructive knee surgery and is on a comeback that saw him score the winner for the Toon in the Premiership game against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Recovery: Michael Owen

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid player has so far had four operations on his left knee and right foot last year.

Nevertheless, England boss Steve McClaren has identified Owen as a key member of his squad to fire them into the Euro 2008 finals, with a double header of the qualifier this month against Israel and Russia being crucial to their fortunes.

"Michael has worked really hard, but he's still got a lot of hard work to do in rehab," Allardyce said in the Independent.

"He will have to do rehab for the rest of his life, over and above the day-to-day training, and he can't ignore it otherwise he is going to put himself into an injury position again. He has to be dedicated on his own to do that rehab and look after himself, which I think he is doing. Hopefully we will all reap the benefits from that by him getting quicker and sharper."
