Pacquiao sends legend Barrera into retirement

Filipino folk hero Pacquiao (45-3-2, 35 KOs) simply dominated Barrera (63-6, 42 KOs) in their first meeting on November 11, 2003 in San Antonio, Texas, winning by an 11th-round technical knockout.
And he did much the same this time, winning by scores of 118-109, 118-109 and 115-112 on the judges' scorecards. Mexican legend Barrera confirmed his intention to retire after the contest.
Pacquiao took the fight to 33-year-old Barrera, who was deducted a point for hitting after the break in the 11th round. Pacquiao also opened a cut under Barrera's right eye in that round.
The 28-year-old Pacquiao has blitzed through the best fighters Mexico has had to offer since 2003, including Erik Morales, who knocked he out twice, Barrera, Oscar Larios, Emanuel Lucero, Hector Velazquez and Jorge Solis.
The hard-hitting southpaw has only lost once in his last 21 bouts, a close decision in 2005 to Morales in their first encounter.
Barrera was rueful about the fight but happy with his career.
"I got caught up during the exchanges," he said. "It was a mistake. I should have boxed more. I got tired."
"This was my last fight," he added.
Barrera is a future Hall of Famer, having defeated many of the top fighters in his divisions, including current or former world champions Morales and Naseem Hamed, both undefeated when he faced them, Paulie Ayala, Kevin Kelley, Johnny Tapia and Kennedy McKinney.
